EDU-MENT: Erasmus+ Project on Mental Health Education for Nurses in Elder / Residential Care

What Is EDU-MENT?
EDU-MENT (Education in Mental Health) is an Erasmus+ “KA220 – VET” (Cooperation Partnerships in Vocational Education and Training) project focused on training nurses who work in home care or residential care settings, especially caring for older adults.
It started on 1 October 2023 and runs for 36 months (until 30 September 2026).
The project is led by the UMIT Tirol (Austria). Its partners include:
- UMIT Tirol (Austria)
- University of Cyprus (Cyprus)
- Häfelekar Unternehmensberatung Schober GmbH (Austria)
- AgeCare (Cyprus)
- University of Maribor (Slovenia)
Why It Matters
- Rising Need for Mental Health Expertise: Nurses in elder care settings often face complex psychological and behavioral challenges (dementia, depression, anxiety, social isolation). EDU-MENT addresses this gap by giving them stronger mental-health training.
- Improved Quality of Care: With better mental health knowledge, nurses can support older adults more empathetically and effectively — reducing mental health crises, improving well-being, and boosting patient dignity.
- Professional Development: The project strengthens the skills and confidence of VET (vocational education) nurses, making their profession more resilient and future-oriented.
- Sustainable Impact: By creating training resources and tools, EDU-MENT aims for long-lasting improvements in care homes and home-care services across partner countries.
What EDU-MENT Will Do / Deliver
- Curriculum & Training Modules
EDU-MENT is developing specialized educational materials on mental health tailored for nurses working with older adults. - Capacity Building
Through workshops, training sessions, and pilot implementations, nurses will apply the new curriculum in real-world settings (care homes or home-care). - Resources & Tools
The project will likely publish guides, best-practice documents, and possibly digital resources (e-learning modules) for wider adoption. - Collaboration & Networking
By involving different countries (Cyprus, Austria, Slovenia), EDU-MENT fosters cross-border learning and sharing of care approaches.
Impact & Expected Outcomes
- Better Mental Health in Elder Care: Nurses trained under EDU-MENT can better recognize and manage mental health issues among the elderly, leading to more preventive and compassionate care.
- Reduced Burnout: When nurses are more skilled and confident, their stress and burnout may go down, improving staff retention and care consistency.
- Knowledge Dissemination: The project’s outputs (training resources, curriculum) will be shared so that other care institutions in Europe can adopt or adapt them.
- Policy Influence: If successful, EDU-MENT could inform future vocational education and training standards, pushing for more mental-health-focused curricula in elder care.
Why EDU-MENT Is a Model for Erasmus+ Innovation
- Targeted at VET Sector: Many Erasmus+ projects focus on universities — but this one specifically empowers vocational nurses, a crucial but often under-supported group.
- Addresses an Emerging Need: As populations age, mental health in older adults becomes more prominent. EDU-MENT is forward-looking and highly relevant.
- Cross-Sector Cooperation: It’s bridging education, healthcare, and social care — a strong example of integrated European partnership.
- Scalability: The training materials and approaches can be used by other organizations beyond the partner countries, amplifying the long-term benefit.
